Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is a dual density sole unit?
A. Dual density soles, usually polyurethane bonded to polyurethane (PU to PU) or PU to rubber have been developed to offer the wearer greater comfort and shock absorption. The inner layer of PU is of a ‘spongy’ consistency which is then bonded to a hard wearing PU or rubber outer layer so as to ensure resistance to heat (PU 120°c, Rubber 300°c), abrasion and oils, acids and alkalis.

Q. What is the difference between waterproof and water repellent garments? A. To be truly waterproof a garment must be an impermeable barrier against wind and snow including wind driven rain and direct contact with surface water i.e. when kneeling on a wet surface. Water repellent fabrics have been treated so that water ‘beads’ on the surface, which helps it, run off the garment, but doesn’t constitute an impermeable barrier.

Q. With reference to clothing what is meant by breathability?
A. Breathability in a garment is defined by it’s ability to allow body moisture to escape at or above a required standard, whilst offering a high resistance to water.

Q. What is the difference between 2 layer and 3 layer Gore Tex® garments?
A. With respect to breathability they perform similarly. The main difference is that 2 layer can have a softer feel whilst 3 layer is more robust.
